On Form and Balance

Designing pieces to be worn, lived in, and kept over time

The Learning

Aiko Tanaka spent over sixteen years designing fine jewelry at Bvlgari and David Yurman, where she developed a deep understanding of balance, material, and restraint. She later founded her own brand in Japan, refining a quieter, more intentional design language before bringing her work to Los Angeles.

Her philosophy begins with the materials themselves. Pearls form slowly, layer by layer, shaped through time, patience, and the quiet rhythm of nature, while gemstones carry a different journey—formed within the earth and revealed through light.

Her work brings these forces together, creating pieces where pearl and gemstone exist in balance—not simply to be worn, but to be lived with.

The Approach

Her process is gradual and without a fixed method.

Each piece begins with placement—how elements sit in relation to one another, and how that arrangement feels on the body. From there, adjustments are made slowly. Pieces are

worn, removed, repositioned, and worn again.

Nothing is rushed toward completion.

Balance is not imposed, but found through repetition—through small changes in spacing, weight, and proportion.

What matters is not achieving perfection, but reaching a point where the piece feels settled.

Something that can be worn without effort.
Something that becomes familiar over time.
Something that holds its presence without needing attention.

Daily Life

Her work is shaped by how she wears jewelry herself.

She pays attention to simple things—how a piece feels when first put on, how it sits after a few hours, whether it stays comfortable without needing adjustment. These details tend to matter more over time.

Jewelry, for her, is part of daily routine. It’s worn while working, moving through the day, and often forgotten until something feels slightly off or unexpectedly right.

She finds herself noticing small differences—
how certain pieces feel natural immediately,

while others take time to settle.

Those observations stay with her, and gradually make their way into how she designs.
